If your belt is "screaming", it's probably too tight. Twice as much "flex" in the belt as the book calls for is about right. Most mechanics set the belt too tight when they replace a tire or remove the back wheel for any reason.

Don't worry if the belt doesn't line up in the center of the pully. As long as isn't so far over that it tries to ride up on the edge you'll be fine. Check for wear on the edges often after you adjust the belt.
